The relationship between dental fear and OHRQoL among elementary school children in a metropolitan area

Abstract
|
|
|
Objectives. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between dental fear and oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among elementary school children.
Methods. The subjects were 831 elementary (4th, 5th and 6th grades) school students who were living in Daegu city. Oral examination were conducted by two trained dentists to detect decayed, missing, filled and sealant teeth according to the WHO epidemiological guideline. Information was obtained using a self administrated questionnaire that was modified from the Children’s Fear Survey Schedule-Dental Subscale (CFSS-DS) and the short form of the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ11-14). All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS.
Results. The overall mean CFSS-DS score was 33.2 and the proportion of high dental fear children (a CFSS-DS score of≥38) was 35.5%. Dental fear was associated with gender, experiencing dental pain and appointment attendance. Also, the high dental fear group had a significantly higher dft/DMFT (decayed and filled deciduous teeth/Decayed, missing and filled permanent teeth) index and dt/DT scores when compared with the low dental fear group. The average CPQ11-14 score of the whole sample was 4.78, whereas the corresponding values for low and high were 4.28 and 5.70, respectively. The subjects with higher CFSS-DS scores had higher CPQ11-14 scores. The dental fear scores were correlated with the OHRQoL scores (r=0.22).
Conclusions. The group with high levels of dental fear experienced less OHRQoL than did the low dental fear group. Thus, dental fear may have a negative effect on OHRQoL in children.
